Is my soil regenerating or degenerating? How do my daily management decisions affect my land? How can I recognize how well my ecosystem processes are working? These questions can be answered with ecological monitoring and, building on this, with Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV).

Ecological monitoring looks at the function of the ecosystem processes - in other words, how well the water and mineral cycle, energy flow and community dynamics function on my land. The focus is not on a specific practice, but on the results that the applied practices produce.

Monitor your Land.

Why we monitor

With ecological monitoring, we learn ways to recognize the health of our land and derive decisions for our management, grazing and financial planning.

  • Benchmarking: Know your starting point.
  • Manage: Recognize early warning signals and take measures based on ecological indicators.
  • Track: Track changes and compile them as records to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of your changes and investments.
  • Inform: Provide consumers and buyers with information that can provide insights into the positive ecological impact of your farming practices.

Ecological Outcome Verification.

What is the Savory Institute's EOV?

EOV is a practical and scalable assessment system that measures the health and development of biodiversity, soil health and ecosystem functions (water cycle, mineral cycle, energy flow and community dynamics).

EOV is an outcome-oriented and context-relevant management method for land managers to be able to recognize whether their land is...

  • degenerating (the soil is deteriorating, biodiversity is declining, water is evaporating),
  • sustainable (the land maintains a stable, static state) or
  • regenerating (soil is being built up, biodiversity is increasing, water and carbon are being absorbed).

EOV provides data and observations to make better management decisions - to positively change your landscape while reaching a broader audience.

Regenerative outcomes in my context.
EOV puts land managers first.

EOV is available to farmers and other land managers who use or would like to use holistic management methods in managing their land. The focus is on areas where there is no or no longer frequent, deep tillage, e.g. grassland, arable land with minimal tillage, orchards, vineyards, agroforestry and silvopastoral systems and more.

To use EOV, a producer works with a local EOV monitor to jointly assess their land through the ecosystem processes and corresponding indicators within EOVs. The producer and monitor collect qualitative and quantitative data on the land annually, e.g. on land cover, water infiltration and biodiversity, and use this data to evaluate the health and productivity of the land. The monitor then provides the land manager with a report containing the results. Together they discuss what insights can be gained for management.
